Assigning Books

I strongly believe that there needs to be a balance in the classroom of canonical works and books that students choose. I think that we need to assign books that they might not be interested in in order to give them a varied background in literature. I also think by assigning books outside their interest areas, it will allow them to develop a respect for books that they may not enjoy, but can see the value and the author's purpose for creating it.

I know that as a student I have not always enjoyed everything I have read. But, I can understand why the book was assigned and what the important themes or points are. By reading books that I would not have chosen myself, I have been able to judge the work on more than my interest. I think that by giving students the opportunity to read texts outside their interest area, will open up their minds to literature and show them that you can recognize the greatness without having fully enjoyed it.

On the other hand, I think that it is important to give students some freedom in reading. As a teacher, you don't want to completely kill their passion and joy-that can do more damage than good. I think if students can choose a book on their own they will see that reading can be a great experience-and fun!
